if you're dosing postassium nitrate to get your nitrates up to desired levels, is it really necessary to dose something else for postassium as well? just curious.

    Describe your schedule

I'd like this to be more than the basic, 'how often do you do water changes' question. Frequency of water changes is an important issue, but there is, in my opinion, so muh more that goes into it. Discus require more water changes that most tetras, a 75 gallon with mostly plants and some...

    my evening...

I work for a rental company. We did Elton John's academy award party... soooo much fun. I know, I know, its 12:30 and I'm home, I'm sooo lame, but I'm pooped. Saw some famous people, Sir Elton literally tripped on me! I've never been so star struck in my life! Tara Reid, Star Jones, Tim Allen...

    dwarf cichlids not eating

Any dwarf cichlid owners ever had problems with new fish not eating? I've got (4) A. trifasciata in a 10 gal planted. They seem to be really skittish and the biggest male is pretty territorial. I've kept blue rams in a similar set up but never had them not eat. Water is good (ammonia = 0...

    a. trifasciata

Well.... what better addition to my planted tanks than some apistogramma trifasciata? stunning fish.... in qt now, and adjust to tank life again (hey, being shipped in a box is hard for a fish... so little water... so little light). I'm pretty excited... always a dwarf cichlid lover, I've had...

    thread algae...

I'm working on my new 20 gallon long. I've got a pretty good case of thread/hair algae. This stuff is long!! I think I've attributed most of the problem to too much light. I've got 130 watts over the tank total... my new plan is to have the lights on 10 hours a day, with a 4 hour 'peak' period...

    lots of stuff....

    lighting issues

I'm working on the lighting for my 20 gallon long planted. Here are the options: 1. Coral life Aqualight. 30" fixture, but 24" bulb. (lmw80 has it). There's no fan, but I think that's ok at just 65 watts. 6700k. Cheap option. Been warned that its not a superior product. 2. Currents...

    light k

Would there be any benefit to a light that is 6700/10000k ? I'm buying a new fixture for my new 20 long (ditching the 30 tall...). One option is this Currents Satellite with one 65w PC bulb, with 6700/10000k. I've always had success with 6700k, and have read that 5,000-6700 is the ideal...

    java moss

I have a base ball size of java moss to rid myself of. I'll trade it for another plant, cutting, or something. OR if you can have it for free if you pay for shipping, pick it up, HAVE to have it, etc.

    more homework please

I'm thinking about doing a reef tank, so for the past few months I've been reading all I can. I watch the threads here at AA and have read through the following books: "The New Marine Aquarium" M. Paletta "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" R. Fenner (need to tackle that one again)...

    Meet Charlie

We had a kegger this weekend. In walked Charlie. And he has not left since. He's really a lover. He purrs the moment you pick him up, sleeps all day. Sigh.... A good man only comes once in a while right? I think I'm in love! http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/camega1 (hopefully, this link works....)

    rams and breeding

so, my rams have laid eggs again. this is the 3rd time in the last month, maybe month and a half. My loach likes to eat the eggs, so I have not seen anything really live beyond the wiggler stage. here's my question: my male is really keen on his female. In fact he never seems to leave her...

Well as many of you know, my betta nomen died the other day. I came home from the photo lab today to find my roommate bought me a gorgeous new crowntail betta. Haven't decided on a name yet, its between Vandercook and Kodak. I guess my roomie felt bad after seeing the empty tank. New betta...

    goodbye betta

Well, my betta Nomen (short for nomenclature) passed quietly in the night. I tested the water, no ammonia, no nitrite. I don't think anything funky got in the water... I suppose it was just his time. He hadn't been as frisky the last few days, so I thought something was up. Poor poor Nomen...

lost a ram! learn from me!

so I was changing the filter in my 10 gal when the bag of peat thats in there (keeping pH down) broke! it was all over, I could barely see through the water. I did an immediate water change and thought every one would be ok, but my GORGEOUS male ram died. He had longer fins, stunning...
