I want to set up a 5 gal low tech planted tank for a betta.

I have a friend with a 5 gal tank that he is not using, and said I could have it.. but it is tank only, so I would need a glass top, filter and light.

I'm trying to price out components as opposed to buying an all in one- like the top fin 5 gal or fluval spec V.

If you have a 5 gal tank- what lighting do you use?

I have heard that you can use a clip lamp- but would that be safe?

Thanks in advance!

Clip on types are fine. I like to use the twisted CFL bulbs on those (runs cooler). They make them in 13w and 23w. Look for the 6700k spectrum.
You could also use a desk lamp, especially the swivel or goose neck style to house those types of bulbs.
With the glass top you will get some glare. Depends on how close the light is to the top.

Yes, CFL bulbs will do, most stores sell the "Daylight" one, that has the plant spectrum of 2700k to 6700k, with the latter recommended.
