Air bubbles in my sand. Is this a bad sign of something to come? Or is this normal? We see the bubbles under the top layer "viewing area"

Nope, especially in a new tank as the sand compresses it will push the previously trapped air up through the bed. If using a deep sand bed, this will continue as the lower levels convert nitrates and it bubbles up out of the sandbed.
