Cant decide between fish-less or fish cycling

Sounds like your off to a good start. The key to a successful and stress free fish in cycle is very light stocking. One or possibly two guppies until the cycle is complete is ideal IMO.
If you get enough seeded media you might not even see a significant jump in ammonia or nitrite.

I received a little bit of media from a friend but not a whole lot. I also bought some anacharis which can be seen in the picture to help
