ok...i started to open the wall up. i figured this would be easy, but then noticed that the header they put in the wall 20 or so years ago was not long enough, so i'm going to have to put a longer header above this tank. i guess i'll just totally reconstruct the entire wall. UGH! at least i'll use a paur of 2x6 instead of the rough finish 4 x 4 they used.
pics!

first, someone asked about a shot of the fish room...well here it is!

Lol. Looks a lot like the craftsmanship I found in the house I bought 13 years ago, although the shoddy wiring here was bare knob and tube.. No tape and no wire nuts. My house is 100 years old. Guess it never gets better. good luck with everything... I will be following along.

I know a pretty good electrician who would be willing to work for a plane ticket just so he could check out all your builds.

I have a 120g planted FW built into my wall. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing a reef tank. Live and learn, next house I'll do bigger and better! That being said, built in is definitely the way to go if you can make it work during a reno! I always get compliments in the set-up. Learn from my mistake and cover your inside wall with plywood/chip board and cover that with plastic sheeting. A small price to pay if you have any splashover during water changes.

thanks batesy. i am going to have a remote sump where water changes will be performed. not a whole lot of splashing at the rear of the DT i hope. i'll put up some sort of splash shield anyway.
my last in-wall was a 195. we used sheetrock called "densarmor" which had fiberglass coatings on both sides. it seemed to hold up pretty well. i was thinking of looking into something similar...

The 195 looks great.....(y)

Hey Doug ,.. Wow,..it's finally happening !! ... I bet you are happy to be back in the saddle again,..,can't wait to see how you attack everything,.both good and bad. This is kinda like a watching Michael Angelo paint a picture.
Seeing that I'm about to transfer my 75 to a 135 gal setup ( as discussed in our pm ).. I'm more than a little interested in how you figure out your overflow rate out of the tank and what you're going to do for a sump setup and return pump etc,....keep us posted,..I'm getting excited for you!! , Dary

no. i don't think i need to insulate the wall. i didn't have much noise on the other side of the wall with the old 195. you could barely hear a light hum. it was quite peaceful actually.
since this tank is only drilled for two 1" bulkheads, i'm probably just going to use something about 1800-2000gph. i won't need a tremendous amount of turn over. just enough to feed my skimmer and such.
