I've got a 5g Fluval Spec with a betta in it. I just got the heater, red grape vine, and frogbit today. I also got a small moss ball that I'm not sure what to do with.
I'm having a slight issue with an oily film on the surface of the water [which you can see some of the residue from it on the top of the sides of the tank] I think it might be that the surface water isn't being agitated enough, but any higher on my pump setting and my betta doesn't do so well.
I've only had this for about two weeks so far. I got a small tank instead of staying with a 10g because I don't have a sink down in the basement for easy cleaning... and the Fluval was on sale for $70, haha. I'm using Prime water conditioner and I got some Flourish Excel for the plants. I'm only putting in a drop or three of that once every 2-3 weeks. [or maybe once a month?]
So my tank hasn't really gotten a chance to have a good cycle yet.
What I would really like to do is have some larger floating plants for my betta to hide in and rest on. I'd really love to have some dwarf hair grass and maybe some red cherry shrimp, but Oracle has already eaten the ghost shrimp I had so maybe I'll have a separate shrimp bowl some other time.
Any advice would be great! I've never done a planted tank before but I think aquascaping is a really cool thing and I'd love to get into it a little more with smaller tanks this year.
