i have a 28 gallon nano cube which has day and night lights. i was wondering what the benefits are to a planted tank as opposed to a non planted tank are and is it worth the money to get the plants and mud and stuff?

A planted tank is a more natural environment for your fish. It helps keep the water cleaner and it looks better IMO.
You don't need an expensive high tech setup to grow plants. There are heaps of low light plants that are easy to care for. You don't need expensive substrate either. You can grow plants in plain old gravel or sand. :)
