Your plants will grow better if you don't vacuum the substrate. The reason is, the old plant and fish material that falls to the bottom of the tank will steadily dissolve in the water and becomes a valuable source of nutrients. The water with the dissolved plant and fish material moves through the roots and is taken in as food. This dissolved fertilizer combined with large, frequent water changes maintains a healthy level of macro and micro nutrients the plants need for good growth. The process saves a "chunk of change" on commercial fertilizers.
