I am getting a 1.5 gallon betta tank, and when looking for heaters, most designed for small tanks are unreliable. I was thinking of an adjustable 50 watt heater, but would this heat it too high? It's adjustable and turns of when the required heat is reached, and turns back on when it needs it. I wanted a larger tank, but it is for my writing desk and anything bigger won't fit.

A 50W heater will do the trick, but it would be out of place in a 1.5 gallon. I recommend a 25W heater for your setup.

You could use a 300W heater, if you could submerge the whole thing, and it would not make the water too hot. The have controls that shut them off when the water is at temperature.

Do they sell those flat bowl heaters near you? 1.5g is pretty small and those are the least obtrusive heaters designed specifically for betta fish. Not adjustable since it automatically cuts off at the temp betta fish like.
