I'm getting a GLA rimless 6g (ADA style). Need help choosing a canister filter. I'm planning on doing FW planted with co2 for a nature style aquarium (amano iwagumi).

I think I've narrowed it down to with the Finnex PX 360 or the Eheim 2211. There's only about a $20~$30 difference, with Eheim being more expensive. I don't know when or if I'll be getting glass lily pipes so in case i don't, i think i like the tubing and spray bar inlet on the Finnex. The green on the Eheim is really loud and distracting so I'm afraid if i got the Eheim I'll be forced to take the plunge on lily pipes for another $80!

I'm also interested in the Fluval 106, but i think the GPH rate would be too high for a 6g. I can't determine if there's a flow control.. This filter is appealing because i like all the newer technology incorporated in it like self priming, sound dampening, and separated media baskets..

Please let me know of you have any experience with these and what you'd recommend.. Thanks!

If the 106 is anything like the 206 then there IS a flow control. It's right by the hose quick release catch on the main top. It's just a lever that when fully down is full flow, slowly moving the lever upwards will adjust flow eventually stopping flow all together. You shouldn't stop flow though with the filter running.

Just thought I would add this.

Depending upon where you are in the world there is an ADA specialist in the UK called THE GREEN MACHINE. They have loads of info on their website about nature aquariums. You may find some more help on there.

Thanks for confirming that the 06 series has a flow control. Do you know if the black tubing is interchangeable with some clear ones? I've never owned a canister so it's unfamiliar territory.

I'm in the US but I've also posted this question in The Planted Tank forum.. there's a lot of ADA-heads there as well.

But even so I haven't owned a canister, I've been doing a little reading and I'm impressed so far with the Fluval 06 series. It's the most expensive one on my list but I think it offers the most. I know that Eheim really has a good track record and that's usually the choice of ADA people, but I don't like how the classic canisters have no priming feature... I don't like the idea of messing with the hose and stuff. Plus I like separated media baskets. My HOB Fluval C2 incorporates separated compartments for the various media and I find that to be ingenious.

The 06 series hoses are replaceable but I'm unsure if they can be changed out for clear tubes.

I understand why you want clear due to the ADA look of tanks.

I like my 206 for the media baskets. I keep all the sponges in mine along with a ton of biorings and an extra floss pad.

I only use a 206 on my 50g planted tank and it's plenty good enough for my community along with all my plants. I have added an extra sponge on the filter intake pipe to reduce how much large debris goes into my filter housing.
