Most rams that you see in stores the culmination of years of cross-breeding and inbreeding. This results in pretty colors but weak survivability. Apparently the fact that they remove the babies has resulted in the "breeding out" of parenting skills. They also inject them with hormones in asia so they look pretty in stores and sell. I can only imagine the damage that it does to the fishes' endocrine systems.

Wild rams or F1s would probably be more drab than your lfs fish. Ever seen a wild type betta or platy? Same deal. They would probably be better parents too.
