his may seem like a pretty pointless question, but when you buy a new tank, do you have to start fresh with new fish and everything new, or can you just transfer the stuff from your older smaller tank into it?

You can transfer but you do have to cycle the tank

Water doesn't hold the beneficial bacteria,filter media, decorations,and substrate do
But even then you'll experience a mini cycle most likely
