I was told and have been reading that Rams can be kept in water at 7pH but show better colors in water in the 5.8-6pH range. So I was going to use a buffer.

Question:
Should I use seachem acid buffer, which will bring down the pH only or use seachem discus buffer which will bring down pH and soften the water as well.

Is there a positive in softening the water for rams?

I would advise against buffing. It's better to have a stable ph. I keep mine at 7.0 and they have as good as colors as any I have ever seen.
