all in all as long as you have enough rock , enough circulation and a decent skimmer
you really wouldn't need either , as your live rock works as a natural filter

This 37g runs like that I also added macro algae that naturally ex orbs nitrates

you don't necessarily need it, but redundancy isn't a bad idea when it comes to filtration.
