Were it me, I would do a 72x36. The extra 2 feet in length is big.
You bring the end of the hose or tube to about a quarter inch above the sand and make a swirling motion. That will stir up any waste which will then be sucked out.
My tips for a Sand tank.
1. If you have an HOB filter use foam over the intake. That will prevent you getting sand into the impellers.
2. If you have a long intake, you may want to shorten it a little bit if it's too close to the substrate.
You should be fine - the motor looks to be on top, after the media.
Gravel is easier to maintain and also keeps beneficial bacteria better
