Sand, Soil?

There are many options, depending on what your goals are for the tank. There are several substrates taht work well, especially for planted tanks.

Eco-complete and Flourite ring a bell for me at the moment. Pool Filter Sand (PFS) is a common choice as well.
 
Pool filter sand is definitely a cheap alternative. You can get it at any pool supply store for about $10 for a 50 lb. bag. That will take care of a standard 55-gallon tank. With pool season here, there should be plenty of supply.
 
Im getting ready to switch my tank to sand. I just cant decide what sand i want to use.
 
As long as the sand isn't overly fine or sharp, it will work fine for plants. Eco Complete and Flourite are both specifically made for plants and therefore more expensive. Of the three Eco Complete is probably the best, but sand would be the least expensive.
