sex change?

I have and adult female bumblebee cichlid, at least she was when she held a mouthfull of babies. Dad made a jump for it during a tank upgrade. Mom and the babies enjoyed the new home. Now that the kids are about 2/3's her size, Mom is starting to turn more and more black. Can they change sexes, or is it a dominance issue
