I have a betta in a large vase, which until about a week ago had a plant suspended above it with the roots in the water for about the last year and a half. A few weeks ago it started having some sort of white specks floating on the surface. I thought it might have been some kind of mold growing on the roots of the plant and spreading on the surface of the water as it grew.
I cleaned the vase a few times, wiping down and rinsing the few roots and completely cleaning the vase and the substrate. After it kept coming back I threw away the plant thinking that it was somehow linked. Now, about a week later I just noticed the white specks in the surface of the water again. To describe the way it looks, it looks like the water surface has Ick!
It is NOT on the fish, though, and does not seem to disrupt his breathing, eating or attitude.
Does anyone know what this might be and what I can do to eliminate it?
