I honestly could have done without one I think. I watched my tank carefully over the first couple weeks and did some rough calculations with ph and kh to get an idea of how many ppm I was getting and the drop checker just confirmed that. I haven't run mine in a couple months to be honest.
I just have my solenoid on a timer and my lights on a timer. CO2 comes on 45 mins before the lights come on and solenoid cloes 30 minutes before lights out. I did fiddle with my CO2 rate to get my plants from pearling obnoxiously but that is about it.
I like my controller... But it certainly isn't a requirement. Remember you plan to hook this up to multiple tanks too. The controller will only read in one tank...
Well, if it makes you feel better, I've already got algae all over the place. I didn't think before I put the tank where it is. There's a window on each side of it!
