What is this growing on my friends live rock. I didn't know what it was when he asked, almost looks like a sponge?

I'd say a sponge. I always see yellow ones growing from people's LR but you never see them for sale. Strange.

there also looked like some mushrooms growing. What sort of requirements do these things need, I'm new to salt water

I agree with Sniper, looks like yellow sponge. If your friend would like to keep it, I would tell him to shelter it from the light somehow. They typically grow under the rocks, and under overhangs. The majority of sponges are non-photosynthetic, and grow in areas of really subdued light, they are filter feeders.

With mushrooms, no extra feeding is necessary. Light and what they can pull from the water is sufficient.
