After you select your co2 system, don't forget to get a drop checker.
These are NICE but pricey.

Here's a cheaper alternative:
Glass Aquarium CO2 Drop Checker Test Optional 4oz 4DKH Liquid US Seller | eBay
If the drop checker doesn't come with a reagent or the reference 4dKH, you can use the pH test I believe in the API master test kit for the bromothymol blue. You can either make your own 4dKH (as referenced in the sticky here by Tom Barr) or buy it.

Well these guys are almost as sensitive as Neons so you'll want to wait till your nice and well established before adding them... I'd get the 12+ since you get the discount from LA.
You'll probably want to get Amanos and/or Otos eventually too. In a planted tank these algae eaters are a welcomed addition.

I'll definitely take you up on that - I'm working on plans for building an entirely DIY reef tank setup when I graduate from college next year. Nothing like spare time spent practicing welding steel and solvent welding acrylic!
