If he does alot of water changes I think they will be ok. I understand wanting to keep them and it is entirely possible.

Even with 7 guppys, 4 Cory catfish and a betta in a 7.8 gallon that isn't cycled?

Maybe for a while if he does 50% partial water changes daily, but only as a temporary solution?

I mean, I'm no fish expert, I only have a betta in a ten gallon, ha ha and I deliberately played it very safe. But I've read a lot of "unhealthy fish" threads that are very similar to this one and they read like horror stories with fish dying one after another. I'm already getting traumatic flashbacks, lol.

Also shane, did you say you had the betta in a tank for 4 months?

if so, save the tank with the gravel, decorations, filter and filter media or filter cartridge -- and keep them wet. They will be a source for introducing beneficial bacteria (bb) into your new tank. The beneficial bacteria will grow in your new tank and will process the ammonia, and nitrites into less toxic nitrates.

oh only temperarily! Im sorry I thought you knew. :)

Already done this can u tell me if the tank was cycled fully would they be happy?

So are alll the gravel, decorations, old betta filter and old "dirty" betta filter media/cartridge now in the new tank?

If so, then that will dramatically help to cycle the tank.

But even then the tank can only be a temporary home until you get a larger tank.

Maybe buy a used tank to save a lot of money.

I think that is a good plan for both your fish and you :)
