I have an Aqueon 30 HOB Quiet Flow filter. There is some room in the back behind the filter pad (it's just a bit of charcoal and blue fluffy stuff) and I was thinking about adding some extra filter media.
I was wondering what kind of filter media would be useful, and it would be great to help keep nitrates down since I have a pair of rams. (I know gravel vac's and pwc's help too, but I would like an extra 'boost')

Thanks for any input :)

That is a good place to put some cheap filter floss in. It will help catch smaller detris particles, pre-filter to keep your pad cleaner longer, and only takes a second to take the dirty floss out and push in new. Filter floss is my favorite media... cheap and catches fine detris which helps polish water.

I will ad some then. I was thinking of stuffing a bunch of anarcharis in there -that would take all the nitrates out!
I'll pick some filter floss up and maybe some ceramic rings if they have any.

I have some experience with Aqueon QuietFlow HOBs, owning both a 55 model that's on my 60 gallon right now as well as a 20 model that was on a 10 when I had that set up...

I normally just run the cartridges that are supposed to go with these filters, rinsing them in used tank water every now and then or changing them when they really get nasty; in fact, right now, I'm running the 55 filter with only the two cartridges this HOB takes and nothing more (I also run an AquaClear 110 on this tank though). However, I used to drop in a pouch of Seachem's PURIGEN into the 55 when I had it set up on an old 60 gallon that ended up cracking and needing to be thrown away right behind the intake pipe "chamber" where the water kind of bubbles and churns before being passed onto the cartridge area...the Purigen is a wicked water polisher that acts as awesome filter media, and I normally run TWO packs of the 100ml bags in the AquaClear filter as well...

So, in the Aqueon, you can consider doing what I did -- that is, dropping a prepackaged 100ml pouch of Purigen in that area/chamber that's just before the cartridge holding area...(y)

Hey Scotty, i'd go with floss and Matrix.....

Well, I know I have some options. Next time we make the journey (literally) I'll see if we can stop in at the little lfs or petco, and I'll grab what ever they have, hopefully floss at least.

Scotty - much cheaper way to go. Hit wal-mart, get some quilt batting (the real name of it skips me, but it looks like a big roll of white fleece). Cut that up and stick it in. Poor man's filter media - $3 for a couple hundred sq. feet of filter floss. Can't go wrong with that!
Good luck!

I'll check that out for sure :) Thanks for the idea!!
