I have a few questions about cory cats.

About 2 and a half weeks ago, I bought 3 green cory cats. I put them in my 10 gallon tank, that I thought contained just a betta (I had thought all my ADFs had died, but I apparently had one left) to quarantine before moving to a 20 gallon with skirt and neon tetras. A few days after having them in, the ADF died. Then I went away on a trip for 3 days. Upon return, one of the cories and the betta had died. One of the cories had a pretty nipped up tail, and died at the two week mark after purchasing. When I took that one back to the store, I bought some salt and put that in, and raised the temp. I only dosed the salt to half, since I was told cories don't like salt. Another store had green cories recently, but wasn't selling them because they had ich, so I figured it was possible mine could also have had it. I'm sure they get their fish shipped from the same place, so if one store got them in with ich, maybe the other did too. None of my fish had white spots though. I turned the temp up on Wednesday. How long should I leave it up?
Also, the green cories were hard to find. Once I make sure this last one is okay, I want to get a few more and eventually put them in my other tank. Assuming this one makes it, can I get another type of cories?
The remaining cory shows no signs of any issues. No nipping at all to the tail. Is it possible this cory nipped the other fish to death? All the others had been nipped, and the last cory to die was definitely nipped prior to death. It's hard for me to say on the others since I was gone for a bit.
The 20 has 5 skirt tetra (a black, a white, and 3 of the glo light ones) and 9 neons. My plan was to put the cories in there, and move a few of the neons in to the 10 gallon tank.

Cories don't nip. It may have fin rot. Do a water change. TEST your water ASAP. The Betta may have attacked it, but its probably Ammonia causing the Fin Rot.

Emerald Green Cories are actually Brochis splendens and are chunkier and a bit bigger than most true Corydoras. Bronze Cories ( look greenish ) are Corydoras aeneus.

Figure out your species for care. Check Planet Catfish for lots of pics n info.

Cories don't like salt. Get rid of the salt.

Try to use sand in Cory tanks or polished small gravel. Groups of same species are best, but you can add other species. If they look similar they may pal around.

It didn't look like fin rot on the one that died most recently. The betta and the first one to die I couldn't tell as much. Between when I left for work and then went on my trip, I essentially didn't see the them for 4 days, and they had obviously been dead a bit when I did get home. For all I know, the betta killed the one, and was working on the second one, then when the first one died, the rotting spiked the ammonia and killed the betta. I did change the earlier this week when I came home to the dead fish, and I will do it tomorrow, since it's my regular day for it. I'll just let the salt get diluted a bit tomorrow when I do the water change. I haven't been adding any more, since I wasn't home after I bought it anyway in order to do that. I came home Sunday night, and left again on Wednesday.

What I have is definitely brochis splendens. Hopefully I can find more, though these were hard to find. I searched around for them for a bit before I was able to find the three I got. Hopefully I can find them again, but I guess if not, I'll get some other cory cats.

The gravel where I have it now isn't really ideal, but the other tank is better. Maybe I will bite the bullet and switch that one to sand some time soon. I've been eying up some new decor, but I have other things to buy first.

+1 to this. Cories are wonderful little guys. I have peppered ones and they are in my 40G B. And they have sand. Don't use salt, they can tolerate it, but it isn't recommend. Is the Betta aggressive to anyone? How is the water? Might of been that since cories can produce quite a bit of waste for lil guys..they do make a mess sometimes too (mostly with gravel) cuz they break food apart and it falls between cracks which if not removed can cause problems.

The only other thing my betta had lived with prior to the cories were ADFs. I never saw him harass anyone, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I still have to check the water and do my water change. I'm waiting till it gets above freezing.

Don't wait on the water change !
Do that ASAP.

Above freezing ???

I have to dump my tank water outside, into the garden. If I'm not careful, it'll run onto the side walk. If it's below freezing, this obviously can cause a problem. Had there been any signs of issues with the fish, I would have done it right away. I just waited a few hours so I wouldn't make ice on the walkway.

Don't you have a shower and a toilet you can dump the old water down?

It never occurred to me to pour it down the toilet to be honest. I suppose I could if I had to. The bathtub or shower would require dragging it up an extra flight of stairs. Honestly, I just usually watch the weather. It doesn't usually stay below freezing for too many days in a row for it to cause a problem.
So far, the last of the cories is doing fine. I've had it now for 3 weeks. If it makes it to next week, I'll put it in the other tank and maybe go search for a few more of them.

Oh haha. I live in Wisconsin so I can't go outside or anything yet. First day of spring today and we have a bunch of snow yet and it was about 12* out today and windy haha. So the toilet works good for me!

I'm from South Dakota so I know the feeling :) .. But I always use my shower for dirty water. It works the best i think.
