on the back right hand side of my tank i have hard white specs or mounts forming on my glass. what could this be. with my fingernail i can scrape them off but i have no idea what they are. they are concentrated in a very specific area of my tank?

If they look like tiny calcified round shells they are Spirorbid worms. If you look closely with a magnifying glass you will see a little feather head sticking out. They are just filter feeders and nothing to worry about.

Not that I know of. All filter feeder populations will increase or decrease based upon the organics in the tank. If they don't have enough to eat they will die off.

Ypu, they are worns. You can scrape them, but they are a natural part of you ecosystem. No harm at all.
