Does any one have any imput on whether to utilize a canopy? I am looking at getting a new tank and I was wondering if I should use a canopy or not. I have see so many tanks without them. what if your fish make the leap of death.

IMO a canopy is more like a work of art that is used to supplement the beauty of your aquarium. I really love the stands and canopies that BRI Aquatic Cabinets makes.

They don’t really keep fish from escaping completely since jumpers can still find their way to the carpet  Egg crates can be used to keep jumpers in.

Biggest issue when using a canopy is heat issues if using MH lighting. Usually a couple of fans installed will keep it all cool though.

If you use a canopy don't you have to do a rertro fit for the lighting?

Usually but not always. Some custom canopies have space for complete hood lighting already. Actually DIY and using retrofit kits would be an advantage IMO.

Another nice thing about stands/canopies is they usually cover the tanks molding so all you see is the glass.

I dont use a canopy. Yes they are nice looking but I use VHO lighting with a metal hood over them. I forget what they are called.
