It has been reported (anectdotally, I don't know of any scientific study) that softer water will produce more females and harder water will produce more males. I keep Endler's livebearers, a cousin of the guppy, and I get about 95% males in the tanks that have the harder, more alkaline conditions like that of my tap water.

In my tank with high light, CO2 injection and a much lower pH the babies are more likely to be female. I also sent a batch of juvies to a fellow hobbyist who has soft water, and she gets almost all females out of her fry. I have to send her males from time to time! There may be more to it than that - conditions that I'm unaware of - but it is interesting :)

I get an even split, soft water and all. But I did just take out a whole lot of Males to go to the LFS.... so it doesn't look that way in thier homes.
