I have something simalar growing in my tank. It just started all of a sudden, after more then a year of being set up. I will look into that awesome to know. :)
 
Actually, IME they do turn white after a few hours of the lights turning off but that doesn't mean that they are dying. They do turn green again when the lights turns back on. When they start to crumble and dissolve is when you have to worry.
 
no they will turn a milky color at night thats normal
I meant if it stays white during the day and starts looking crusty it will emit nitrates into the water but you can cut it off at the base and it will grow back nice and full
sorry mis worded myself or should I say short worded lol
