Potentially silly question.

I was given a bunch of equipment for my tank, and among the gifts was a SeaClone protein skimmer. However, it is a "biggie" - the one intended for a 150gal tank.

My tank is only 36 gallons - is it possible to "over skim" my tank, or is this safe for me to add?

I wouldn't use it. Sea clone skimmers in general are junk. I never got it to skim right, let alone one so oversized that might require being deep in water that you might not be able to do.

This one hangs off the tank, so depth isn't an issue, but it is disappointing to hear they are crappy :/

Yes you can over skim. You can remove all your trace elements with a skimmer that is extremely oversized

sea clone skimmers are in no way a decent skimmer I had one for a long time always doing mods to it just to get it to work , more of a head ach than you really want
if you want a skimmer that is reliable this is not it
I still have one but I'm using it just for water movement in the feeder tank I set back up
as it isn't good for anything else
