Being in the Susquehanna Valley of PA - you know something is up when:

"Large amounts of flooding rain"

is prefaced by:

"Fortunately our only risk is"

Just chiming in from Connecticut. Basically same deal as Long Island. Mixed emotions about Gloria in '85. It really messed things up, but it's also the reason I met my wife :)

This one does look like it will be a bit worse than Gloria. We already have a higher water table from all the rain we've gotten in the last month. The tides will be at an astronomical high when the storm hits, and it's moving at a slower pace so the rain and wind will both last longer.

As I work from home, we finally caved and purchased a portable generator (they are due in this afternoon at a local power equipment place). Got lucky as all the big box stores laughed and said none would be in stock for days, and the only other power equipment place I tried wanted $2,100 for a 5,600 watt portable!!! Talk about price gauging!!!!

The one I found ran $799 for 6,600 watts. A pretty fair price I'd say. And keeping my office with power means keeping my tank fishyless cycling with power as it's located there :) Will probably keep the lights off most of the time to keep the power usage down to just the filter for now....we'll see how the parameters hold up.

It's a bit unreal here in the NYC area ... stopping all NYC mass transit starting noon tomorrow ... Atlantic City "closing" .. well if the casinos are closed, AC's basically closed. Every supermarket I've been to is a mad scene.

AND ... for you L.I. members ... I just saw on a local T.V. station that there is a "mandatory" evacuation south of Sunrise Hwy from the Queens border to the town of Rockville Centre.

How is everyone doing? I lost power earlier for about an hour so far. It's not too bad in Norfolk va. All fish are ok here good luck.

We still have power in My Denbigh area,NN so far,it went off and on a couple times earlier. My Relatives in the Hidenwood area lost their power about 10:30 this morning.Of course worse is still coming.Be glad when tomorrow gets here.I did turn on my lights real early this morning on my tank, knowing we will lose power later.

Did you see the story with the two people and a cat they rescued off oceanview? That's like 8 minutes away from me.

Yeah saw that, apparently they were about two days late in deciding to leave Portsmouth to beat the storm.People never fail to amaze me.Problem is they put other people in danger.

Yea when they first showed the out there they were alone by the time they rescued them there was like 30 people of there

I know I'm ready for whatever happens to upstate NY. 2 generators at standby, one 4KW, the other is an old military unit(12 VDC output now, to run a 400 watt inverter, until I upgrade the inverter). As for the other stuff, I'm basically ready for a complete natural disaster, 4 gallons of water for me, a RO backpacking filter(hand pump system), 2 gallons of kerosene for lanterns, 1 gallon of whitegas for cooking, enough food for 2 weeks, and about 8-9 gallons of gas for generators.
I'm just hoping to not need any of it, and thankfull that it isn't winter(would need more kerosene then to maintain heat).

For those in LI, it probably needs a good washing(joking).

U no were just supposed to get wind and rain just rain ware i live

That tells you how big this hurricane is...The center is just passing the Virginia/Delaware border now. That is a long way away still. It's coming.

Gloria was a bit stronger, but it was over in a few hours. This one is going to take it's sweet time....And leave a lot of rain.

In jersey getting hit with rain hard some wind too.. Tired but dont wanna go to bed ughh

My weather station just went off for barometric drop...I have never heard that, even with the blizzards the past few years.

Has gone from 1013.5mb down to 999.2mb in the fast few hours.

And I'm not even close to the coast or the hurricane....It's a big storm.

I'll keep a record just for fun...

Pressure was at 1015.2mb at 6pm.

Now:

Pressure: 999.2mb falling rapidly
Temp: 69F
Humidity: 95%
Max Wind Gust: 26mph East
Rain: 1.12" since 6pm

Just issued a Tornado warning for the adjacent county :) Fun

Hydrogen Peroxide For Dissolved Oxygen - by Dr. Erik Johnson Hydrogen peroxide can be used to increase the dissolved oxygen in the system. H202 + H20 ----------> H20 + 02 Simply use 1/2 cup per hundred gallons. I prefer, however, to apply peroxide in a typical spray bottle, squirting it forcefully under the surface of the water into tanks and vats in trouble, I use 60 squirts per 100 gallons. What you will see is the fish will leave the surface, and swim about as if there was no dissolved oxygen deficit. The time for this to occur is approximately one hour. The benefits are seen for a full 4 hours. The hydrogen peroxide to use is drugstore 3% peroxide. It's great in emergencies. If applied directly to the fish, or applied directly to their water in an undiluted form, gill damage could result, so apply it away from the fish.

just thought id post this here!

Great to know! Thanks!

Oh no sorry guys! Must suck over there! :(

But...excuse my naiveness, but I thought hurricaines were only in Florida or Louisiana?

Theoretically they can hit anywhere on the coast and if they are strong enough/big enough they will travel a great distance inward. Florida/the Caribbean gets them alot bc of the warm water and the air currents.... They are in the "sweet spot" so to speak. Conditions are pretty good for hurricanes there.

Now louisiana and the gulf coast get them on occasion when they wander off to the west instead of going their "normal" route. Speeds are increased in the gulf bc of the warm water.

One year in Florida there were 4 hurricanes in the same area in 4 weeks. THAT was rough!

I have lived in both states for 21 years combined.
